I can remember way, way, way back in the 2nd grade, my teacher Mrs. Rose said, "Angela Ferguson, you are a very special girl." Considering I never understood what she was teaching in her class (or any other classs/grade for that matter) I never really knew what she meant. I used to make her a bouquet of flowers, made from fan folding squares of bathroom tissue, held together with pipe cleaners and presenting them to her in place of taking tests, so I could at least get some kind of grade. (Can you say A.D.D.!) Thank you Mrs. Rose for placing that bit of confidence in my head.
Anyway, throughout the years I've created all sorts of things and sold them successfully. Then I stumbled upon cloth dolls and on my 10 year journey of dollmaking, I finally came upon my own unique style of handcrafted dolls - colorful, animated, free-spirited, and one-of-a-kind dolls with attitude! I never imagined that my part-time love would eventually become my profession, and I am so grateful that it happened the way it did. Looking back at my life, I would not change a thing. Through local doll clubs, online classes, and art doll books I continue to hon my artistic dollmaking skills.
Creating Art Dolls is a mental freedom I enjoy. When shopping for the materials, I let the movement of the patterns and colors form a mental picture of the type and positioning of the doll. Sounds crazy, but so true!! Dollmaking has added to my life a creative outlet of where I am emotionally. I am so grateful to have been blessed with this skill I could just jump up and down!!!
